A Bit Different, but Still Fun

by

To start: yes, this is a proper .hack series, and maintains many of the core elements that hold all the others together. However, as the art shows, it has a cuter and somewhat more childish tone than its peers. It's also, unlike sign and roots, a complete story that's not merely a prelude to a video game trilogy (yay!).

Set long after the conclusion of the original game trilogy, a pair of siblings run across familiar shenanigans while just trying to enjoy the game. While it does get darker towards the end, it's without the heavy angst and loneliness that pervades its peers. Indeed, it's a thematic opposite that focuses on friendship.

And while it looks very different from the other series, the artwork is not bad and complements the lighter tone well.

All told, it's not groundbreaking, but it's a fun show in its own right and a decent addition to the .hack franchise.
