Doukyusei (Classmates) Blu Ray Review

by -

Not gonna lie, this is one of the nicest sets I own. It's packaging quality is comparable to a low-tier japanese set. To describe the box that houses everything, it isn't the plasticky feeling material used with the Monogatari singles, nor the velvety paper used with the magi dvd sets, but somewhere in-between (and is thicker than both, thankfully.) It certainly isn't chipboard but it has a satisfying sturdiness. The blu ray case is boring, the booklet textured and high quality, and the postcards cute but a bit smaller than usual. As for the actual movie, everything is great (sound, video, subs.) One thing I wish this release had is the soundtrack, which should have been done at this price point and is why I deducted a star.

Shame on you Aniplex for not releasing a standard edition. Forcing people to go collector or bust is shamelessly greedy, even moreso since this great film will probably never see another release. But who am I to judge, I support you, so shame on me I guess.

Doukyusei (Classmates)

Doukyusei is a short, sweet, and simple story about two students at an all-boys school who fall in love. It sounds like a tired cliche, but what sets this film apart from other works is that it is free of the gross, negative tropes that are ever-present in the BL genre.

Instead the drama stem from problems any teenage couple would face. Doubts, insecurities, what will happen in the future? And it's handled beautifully.

And I love that the characters are really relatable, and that paired with the SUPERB voice acting (Hiroshi Kamiya and Nojima Kenji did excellent jobs portraying their characters) makes them feel like real teenage boys going through the ups and downs of being in a romantic relationship.

Aside from being a great story, the animation is gorgeous and the soundtrack, although simplistic (like everything else in this film) will tug at your heartstrings.

Please do yourself a favor and watch it!
